The IELTS is recognized in Australia, Canada, the UK, the USA, Ireland, and New Zealand and many more. The total duration of the test is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests the applicant in two main types of exams: Academic and General Training.  It is important to understand that although both assess the English language proficiency of candidates, but their purpose is different.

IELTS Academic is required by students for the intention to study abroad at the Undergraduate or postgraduate levels or any other higher studies. It is also taken by working professionals for the purpose of registration. The Academic test includes four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. There is a slight difference in the Reading and Writing sections of IELTS Academic from that of IELTS General in the terms of formatting and level of difficulty.

IELTS General training exam is required for individuals who are looking to migrate to an English-speaking country for job opportunities, secondary education and some kind of training programs.  Like the Academic test, the General Training test consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. However, the exam style especially in the Reading and the Writing sections is more focused on the English used socially, and in workplace on a routine basis. Listening and speaking is similar as IELTS Academic in terms of structure and difficulty. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

The Exam pattern consists of testing in 4 main areas of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. We highly recommend IELTS coaching from Cambridge certified faculty to score IELTS band required for admissions.

S.NO  Sections  Duration  Total Questions
1 Reading  60 min 40 Qs
2 Writing  60 min 40 Qs
3 Speaking  11-14 min 3 parts
4 Listening  30 min 40 Qs

The Reading section has three parts with a different type of comprehensions such as articles, advertisements, and extracts from books. These questions are designed to assess a range of reading skills from understanding their literal and inferred meanings to main ideas and details.

The Listening section is divided into four parts, each with a different type of audio recording. Candidates are asked to listen to monologues and conversations and participate in a series of questions related to the recordings.

The Writing section consists of two tasks:

Task 1 (20 minutes): Candidates are presented with a visual representation of information (e.g., a graph, chart, table) and are required to write a short report describing the key features.

Task 2 (40 minutes): Candidates write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

The Speaking section is vital to assess the candidate’s communication skills in English.

It is divided into three parts:

Part 1 (Introduction and Interview): The examiner asks general questions about familiar topics.

Part 2 (Long Turn): The candidate is given a task card with a topic and some prompts. They have one minute to prepare and take notes before speaking for 1-2 minutes.

Part 3 (Discussion): The examiner and candidate engage in a more in-depth discussion related to the topic from Part 2.

The IELTS test is scored on a band scale from 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest score. Each section is equally weighted, and the overall band score is the average of the four individual scores. It is important to check thoroughly the band score requirement by different colleges, institutions and organizations for admission or employment.
